A Natural Cyclotron

As part of our meeting this week in northern Indiana, the QN staff made a date to have dinner in nearby New Buffalo with our PIs from Notre Dame. The UND guys arrived on time; we were late and not all of us arrived. But we had an excuse.
We took two cars. Tom, Bob, and Marge left a little early to visit the shore of Lake Michigan before heading to dinner. Beth, Kris, and Ken left later and took what we thought was the direct route. OK, it usually is the direct route if a pair tornados does not interrupt your trip.
The sirens blared and the wind kicked up and Beth and Kris and I voted for the better part of valor and headed for the nearest shelter. Even though we were not customers, the "Pumps on 12" restuarant staff were a nice as could be, sharing their basement with us as the storm passed. When we emerged, we tried to resume our journey but were stopped by felled powerlines and trees. We eventually found an alternate route and met PIs Dan Karmgard and Mitch Wayne, who waited patiently for us in New Buffalo. The pictures above show felled trees and a train (!) that was knocked over.
Tom, Marge, and Bob were stuck for hours behind a tree that blocked them from leaving the lake shore. They eventually made it back to the hotel.
All are well. The meeting wraps up tomorrow morning.
